This project was conceived under the aim of giving a solution for two problems currently faced by the agro-food sector: the volume of waste generated and the negative effect of the production inputs use, especially those chemical synthesis products as pests, fertilizers, growth regulators, etc.
It was started in 2012 by the identification of the two main active principles in agro-food waste by CTAEX (the National Agro-food Technologic Centre in Extremadura). After, the compounds with a potential pest effect were selected thanks to lab trials and toxicology and eco-toxicology tests to make sure that these do not have any effect on the environment, the farmer and the consumer.
All this was introducing the second main objective for the project: developing an industrial methodology for extraction and formulations to be implemented on the fields. In this way, a natural pest was created, which included whey and garlic extract at its composition. Its effectiveness has been tested on three important crops in Extremadura: tomato for industry, olive tree and vine, during the last two crop seasons. Gestiona Global was in charge of the project assessment on the environmental impact and the finances.
